What Microsoft documented

The Microsoft 365 Copilot release notes list GPT-5.5 Instant and Thinking in Copilot Chat across Android, Windows, iOS, Mac, and web in May 2026.

Microsoft’s May 7 GPT-5.5 Instant announcement also names Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio. Availability, release channels, and tenant behaviour can change, so check current documentation and your tenant before planning around a specific model.

These sources do not establish that GPT-5.5 powers every Microsoft 365 app feature, Power BI workflow, or DAX task. A model option in Copilot Chat should not be presented as proof of broad product integration.

What enterprise data teams should verify

Availability

Confirm which model options appear for the tenant, user group, client, and Copilot surface being tested. Record the date because rollout state can change.

Data and access boundary

Map the organisational data that the chosen Copilot surface can retrieve for each test user. Review oversharing and permission issues before adding more users.

Output quality

Use representative tasks and evidence-based scoring. A newer model name does not establish accuracy, structured-output quality, or business value for a specific workflow.

Governance and support

Document allowed use, review requirements, audit evidence, incident handling, and the owner who can pause the rollout. Keep model changes in the change-management process rather than treating them as a silent upgrade.

A practical validation sequence

  1. Select one Copilot surface and a small user group.
  2. Capture the model options and tenant settings observed on the test date.
  3. Test common, restricted, ambiguous, and unsupported requests.
  4. Review source access and generated output separately.
  5. Record quality, risk, and adoption measures.
  6. Expand only when owners accept the evidence and remaining limits.

This sequence gives the data team a documented rollout decision without guessing what the model does across the wider Microsoft product estate.
