Understand Microsoft Fabric through its core workloads

Microsoft Fabric is a hosted analytics service. It puts tools for data import, engineering, science, storage, live data, and reports in one product. These tools share OneLake and common platform services.

Teams still need to design the data, access, cost, and support model. Microsoft’s Fabric overview lists the current tools and design. Check each tool’s docs for its release stage, regions, license, and limits.

OneLake is the shared data store

OneLake is the logical data lake for a Fabric tenant. Fabric tools can read and write data there. This can cut duplicate copies and one-off links between tools.

A shortcut points to supported data stored in another place. It can reduce data movement, but it does not remove source risk. Test access, speed, egress cost, and failure paths.

Give each workload a clear job

Import and prepare data

Data Factory provides links to source systems, pipelines, and data flows. Data Engineering provides Spark notebooks and jobs for code-led work.

Store and query data

A lakehouse joins files and tables for data and analytics work. Fabric Data Warehouse gives SQL teams a warehouse. Fabric also has databases for live app data. Mirroring can copy changes from supported sources into OneLake.

Use Microsoft’s data-store decision guide to compare these options. Do not choose a store by its name alone.

Work with live data and reports

Real-Time Intelligence works with data as it arrives. Power BI adds data models, reports, and sharing. Set the needed delay, update rate, history, and user load first.

Build models and use Copilot

Data Science supports model tests and related work. Copilot can help with some tasks inside Fabric. Check the exact tool, tenant setting, region, capacity, and license before you plan to use it.

Governance needs named owners

Fabric includes data search, access rules, labels, audit data, and links to Microsoft Purview. Microsoft’s governance overview explains the current scope and where other licenses may apply.

Name owners for workspaces, data, access, quality, incidents, and end-of-life work. The platform does not make those choices for the team.

Test one full data path

Choose one path from source to report or model. Test import, storage, change steps, access, lineage, capacity, release, monitoring, and recovery. Note what Fabric can replace, what it should connect to, and what stays outside.
